My art is a series of experiments - I tweak the process, try new materials, and use nostalgic subjects to play around with. The goal is always to make nice stuff to hang on walls and to try to make people pause a moment and be happy. Marylin has been a recurring theme for me when I want to experiment with different ideas for portrait painting. With this piece, I’ve once again borrowed a color palette from the past (Warhol’s of course!) and tried out a few new ideas to push farther into a territory I’ve never been. I pushed the negative space to a level where it makes up more than half the painting surface. I needed to come up with new masking and stencil techniques to pull this off and am looking forward to seeing where I can take this concept further - to lay it on landscapes and still-lifes as well. Another step in boiling down and simplifying in a modern way.

Upstate NY painter, Todd Koelmel enjoys a practice that allows a back & forth flow between digital and analog art. His graphic style and use of hard edges lends itself to simplification – a boiling down that’s both nostalgic and modern. “Before professionally painting, I spent a chunk of my early career in the fight to slow climate change. Subject matter ranges widely from bucolic Hudson Valley landscapes, to abstract sunsets, and on to pop culture satire & iconography.
